It’s Unreal How Much Reality TV Loves Tucson It’s Unreal How Much Reality TV Loves Tucson
High-profile episodes of quite a few TV series rolled into Tucson over the last fiscal year, including ABC-TV’s heartwarming Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which employed dozens of local crew, craftsmen and craftswomen while rebuilding a house for a deserving Tucson family. Another area family learned the ways of proper child rearing thanks to another ABC-TV series, Supernanny, which we assisted with various permits and crew hirings. MTV filmed one lucky college student throughout his entire semester on the University of AZ campus for its hit show True Life: I’m a Freshman, while CNN enjoyed a lengthy Tucson visit while filming for the upcoming docu-series Latino in America. The Danish version of Last Comic Standing filmed its entire series at the Price Canyon Ranch (located near Douglas, AZ), as we happily played host to a staggering number of visits from cable shows appearing on the Travel Channel (such as Man vs. Food and Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, pictured above), Discovery Channel, BBC-TV and HGTV. Most recently, the Sundance Channel was here shooting three segments of its hit show The Lazy Environmentalist featuring three Tucson residents. In addition, look for Wyatt Earp on PBS American Experience in January.

Unless you’re exclusively selling rain gear, there’s no better place to shoot your spring or summer catalog than Tucson, thanks to our bright sunny winters. We recently assisted a bevy of beautiful shoots all around town, including the edgy UK company Superdry, a department store named Otto (sort of the JC Penney’s of Germany) and the refined fashions of Roaman’s, who so enjoyed their shoot in the visually stunning Mercado District this past September that they came back for another shoot less than three weeks later.

TFO continues to collaborate with The Loft Cinema in bringing more than a few notable filmmakers into town for special screenings, always followed by stimulating Q&A sessions. These visits also allow us to market Tucson on a more detailed basis, giving us direct access to filmmakers who are already awed by Tucson’s filmmaking reputation. This past year, The Loft brought in directors Bob Rafelson (Five Easy Pieces), Albert Maysles, pictured above (Grey Gardens, Salesman) and former Tucsonan Kirby Dick (Outrage), Oscar-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri as well as our very own screenwriter-in-residence Will Conroy (Transsiberian), who in his “other” life is also President of the venerable Arizona Inn which has been owned by his family for generations. We remember fondly working with Will several years ago (when he still resided on the East coast) on his feature directing debut, Catalina Trust, about an Inn in Tucson owned by one family for generations...

We also supported Reel Inspiration’s second consecutive Director’s Workshop taught by Mark Travis for local filmmakers; the Hanson Film Institute and its Tucson Cine Mexico 2009, which brought in Producer Frida Torres Blanco and featured local filmmaker Rudy Joffroy with his documentary Los Caidos; the 2009 Tucson Film & Music Festival where screenings of Largo and The Sweet Lady with the Nasty Voice played to packed theaters; and we hosted a lively brunch at El Charro for visiting filmmakers who were invited with their films to Tucson’s own Arizona International Film Festival.
